evl undone

The nature of this task was to create a short film with the group of your choosing. The group I chose was myself, Hamza and Ahmed. During the first week we watched a couple of films groups last year from what we decided what type of film we wanted to make. UK urban gangster movie. Ahmed thought of the concept however I wasn’t sold on the idea but after a couple of dissuasions we came to an agreement.

For the next two week our group focused on pre-production. The reasoning behind this was because ‘Lorri’ Our teacher told us that you should spend most of your time preparing for the film however the filming should only take our two days that’s why we wanted to make sure everything was done correctly. My role in the group was to direct so I watched a several UK urban gangster movies such as: ‘ the most notable movie I came across was kidadulthood”. This movie was a prefect example of what we wanted our work to look like. I watched a couple of key moments in the movie. I took note of what I liked and make notes of what parts we could recreate. Once I did my research it was up to Hamza and Ahmed to do the rest of the research (music, props, location, etc)

During my research I mentioned this issue. Audio and Visuals are an important part of any movie this was a big issues for us as we did not have a camera man/audio man. This caused me to have a lesser role in the film. I feel like this affect our overall because we had to deviate from the original script, change up the shot list and adjust the story in a way that I wasn’t in it however the audience was could still understand it. Next time I do any project I am going to have actor rather than having myself in the movie as it can cause issues such as this.

The next step was filming. I enjoyed film a lot however we had a lot of issues such as the weather changing a lot during that week. Again this focused us to make changes when editing. I was using a camera I was inexperience (151) this lead our film being delayed, as we had to change camera also it began to rain. Using deviating from the time table lead to late of issues such as us rushing the work due to the time deadline

research on the conventions of mise en scene and what makes a urban uk gangster movie (undone)

I am going to be building a body of research on the convention of my short films. I will be finding what conventions are used in an urban gangster movie I will also be finding out what mise en scene I will need

The firstly I am going to be talking about is visuals, the reason I am choosing this convention is because visual are vital part of mise en scene and an important convention. The first movie I have been looking at is ‘Kidadulthood’. This movie depicts an urban city gangster movie which has a lot of landscape such as flats, buses, rundown shops. These convention are very important as it helps the audience have a good understand of what they will be watching secondly by having these types of visual as I mentioned previously you get a general idea of where you’re looking at and where it would be located i.e. London, Manchester, Birmingham. Throughout this movie we can see these conventions as they play a very vital part in the story arch. When you see a young male/female in an area such as this you start to understand the character without even having to say anything you will instantly understand that he/she lives in a trouble area where there is a lot of violence and poverty. These type of aspect in a visual convention are key and without it wouldn’t make sense for example: if you had male/females just like I previously states however they would be walking in a nicer area you would get the feel that he/she lives a better life compared to those who live in flats. I want to make something clear I am not basing this on fact but stereotypes of how people depict certain areas and ethnic groups. If you have a black teenager walking though urban area nobody would stop to think however you were to have that same black teenager walking through a middle/high class area people wouldn’t believe it as much and this could lead to your audience losing interest that is why having the right people in the right place otherwise your visual repression of what that convention is will be wrong.

The second convention of visual is lighting. I had a discussion with my teacher about the importance of lighting and we started to evacuate and take about this specific scene. I mention earlier in my paragraph that I was looking at the movie ‘Kidadulthood’ because it posseted the right convention so I tasked myself to understand and take about what mise en scene are used and what mise en scene I will need to use in my own film. In this scene as you below you can see a fight/death scene. This scene help revel what type of lighting is need when and why. ‘Sam’ – The Antagonist is always dark and the lighting is turned a lot more this suggest that this is low-key lighting. The convention of low-key lighting is to create dark and evil effect hence why it’s used in a lot of horror movie I believe this is why it was used in this scene for this character as it reflects not just on the scene but who he is as a person onto of that it helps the audience understand who is the bad guy and who is the good guy. The ‘Trife’ – Protagonist lighting is completely different compared to Sam. He is a lot brighter he is ‘High Key’ if you will. This gives an off a feeling of innocent once again the lighting is playing a key part off what we see. Put together the lighting changing from dark back to light creates a battle of good vs evil in a way. I am starting to understand what conventions of lighting are used to create an urban gangster movie such as this. If I use all of the above in the correct manner I should and will be able to recreate a movie such as this in a way which it corresponds with what my findings have presented

The third convention of visuals are costume this is a vital part of mise en scene as it give the audience an idea of who and where there character are from. As I said in my last paragrah  I am going to take about the movie ‘Kidulthood’. Throughout this movie the characters are wearing generic ‘gangster clothes i.e. large hoodies, chains, and caps. There are a number of reasons for this the first being location because this movie was created in London and urban city so it would make sense for them to be wearing this type of clothes.

Short Film Update ‘Kings of Weladstone

Our group have made alot of progress in many area the first being props, location and equipment. Ahmed and I have bought some props for the short film. The props I have bought are a bat and the props Ahmed has bought is Ski masks. I think this will help the film look alot better because we’re spending money on the best possible props also props add to the narrative and helps the viewer enjoy the film alot more. We have find a couple of great locations for our short film however we have not done the risk assessment when we do we will have pictures of the locations. I think the audience will really like the locations it helps the narrative alot.  Lastly the Equipment. I have be debating alot weather I should book out the clip on microphone or the boom mic after hours of thinking I have come the conclusion that we should use boom microphone. From what I can tell from my research boom microphones are the industry must when you’re filming a movie.

development of film undone

I am going to be talking about the development of technology in the film industry. I will comment and evaluate how film has evolved over the course of the last 100 years, to do this I will need to do research on how film has changed.

The late 1800s was an extremely vital year for film development and it all started with the two men ‘Louise Le  Prince’ and ‘William Friese-Green’. Both men have been credited with the creation of the first ‘Camera’, many debate who created. The first camera could capture a sequence of images in a quick succession on a filmstrip. The first showing of a moving film was in England was called ‘Arrival of train at (The Lumiere Brothers, 1985’) without these early films we wouldn’t have the films we know and love today. The ‘Lumiere Brothers’ held some of the first screening images in 1885. The audience supposedly ran out because they thought the train was real. As you can see film was something very new and has developed into something amazing. Despite moving images being as concept before the ‘Lumiere Brother’ however many argue that they influenced many other filmmakers such as ‘George Melies’ who supposedly the first person to add narrative to a moving. Some also believe that the Chinese however that is up for debate.

Before movies had sound there was a golden age of film without sound this era was famous for over-the-top skits and title in-between shots. One of the most famous character and symbol of this era was Charlie Chaplin. He single handily carried this era however there was an issue with this type of film the narrative was very limited so film had to evolve. It all started with the movie ‘The Jazz Singer’ the first monition with sound effects and synchronized dialogue. This created a new genre of film ‘talkers’

The next development of the film industry was the ability to have color in your film. Before 1937 all films and pictures where in black and white however this wasn’t a bad thing. Many movies created in the black and white era can and did evoke emotion with the audience and some even awarded Oscars. ‘Cupid Angling’ (1918) was the first feature film in color however the most famous was the ‘Wizard of Oz’ 1939. This movie was brought to life with ‘Technicolor’

Before we had digital camera and where able to capture, develop, project and store film we had to use a different method this method was called photo chemical. This method has and still is being used today. Many agree that being able to have the physical copy of your film is more reliable compared to having it on a computer it can become corrupted. Many film which have been captured with digital cameras aren’t watchable anymore this is why many filmmakers believe this new development in film industry will kill film. This system has a number of issues disadvantages the first being the cost. When compared to a movie likes slum dog millionaire, which was the fist digitally shot movie to win an Oscar. This was a break though in digital movies however it was a huge hit on film.

The up and coming new technology to take over the film industry was digital up. For a long time film were and still is the norm when making a film. The film camera to some people are the only way of making film however there was a lot of disadvantaged’s when it coming to a film. The first issue was the price of making a film. The average film could hold around 10 minutes worth of film once the film ran out you would have to get another copy this was a time consuming and money consuming method. The second issue was the distribution cost and processing the film however there was a lot of advantages with the method and style of making a movie the fist being the pace of the movie. Nowadays film directors can stop look and footage and this slows down the pace compared to a movie shot on film where you did not have that options. They would have to wait until it was proceed.

At the other end of spectrum the first CCP Chip was created in bell labs in New Jersey. In the 1970 sony created
